Does the library offer tutoring or academic coaching?

Answer

Yes - The Student Center for Academic Achievement (SCAA) - located in CORE 343 - provides peer-to-peer content tutoring for writing across the curriculum, and for a number of math, statistics, and science courses including Biology, Chemistry, Computer Science, Kinesiology, and Physics. The SCAA offers in-person and online tutoring through set appointments scheduled either in person, by phone, or email, as well as drop-in hours.

The SCAAlar Appointment Program

Currently-enrolled CSUEB students can apply for the privilege of having 4 pre-scheduled weekly appointments in a row, which is an exception to regular SCAA policies. A student who may benefit from participation is one who may have a particular project they are prioritizing, one who desires a set, weekly routine, or one who is committed to incremental progress.

Other SCAA Services - Imbedded Programs

Additionally, the SCAA offers embedded, collaborative support through its Writing Associates (WA) and Supplemental Instruction (SI) programs. The WA program embeds a SCAA writing tutor into a course that includes a significant amount of writing. The WA serves as an ally to the students and a liaison to the professor. WAs support students in a variety of ways. This may include:

  • Assisting with clarifying assignments
  • Leading or co-facilitating in-class discussions and activities
  • Offering feedback on students’ drafts
  • Meeting with students outside of class to assist with any stage of the writing process

The SI program offers peer-led support for historically difficult subjects and major gateway courses. SI Leaders are high-achieving students recommended by faculty members and recruited and trained by the SCAA. They attend assigned lecture sections to model successful behaviors and identify challenging content for review in regularly scheduled group study sessions, which generally consist of interactive discussions and collaborative practice activities facilitated by SI Leaders. Any student enrolled in a supported course may benefit from voluntarily attending sessions and frequent participation often results in improved comprehension and performance, contributing to student retention and progress to degree completion.

The Online Writing Lab (OWL)

The SCAA Online Writing Lab (OWL) allows CSUEB students to submit papers online and receive tutor feedback via email, returned within 48-72 hours after submission. The goal is to help students develop confidence as writers through the convenience of online feedback and collaboration. Writing tutors do not proofread or edit assignments.
